Love them or hate them, freckles have been the topic of fashion magazines for decades. Fortunately, cosmetic technology today allows people to embrace or erase their freckles as they wish.

What Are They?

Freckles are caused by the overproduction of melanin pigment, which is caused by exposure to UV light. People with red hair and pale skin are more sensitive to sunlight, can burn more easily, and as a result are more likely to develop freckles. Freckles are most common on the parts of the body most exposed to the sun, like the face and arms. Additionally, freckles appear during the summer and tend to fade during the winter.

Prevention

If you don’t wish to embrace your freckles, you can take some simple steps to keep your skin clearer. The best advice for those who want to minimize freckles is to avoid activities like sunbathing, tanning beds, and spending extended periods in direct sunlight. While avoiding sunlight can be challenging in the summer, quality sunscreen can help protect sensitive skin. Quality sunscreen will be labeled as broad spectrum, meaning that it will shield against both UVA and UVB rays. While UVB rays cause sunburn, UVA rays play a greater role in skin changes related to aging.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you select a sunscreen with a SPF rating of 30 or higher. Many dermatologists also recommend water-resistant sunscreen, which will continue to shield your skin while wet. Water resistance will last either 40 or 80 minutes before the sunscreen needs to be reapplied.

Treatment

Sun damage is often not immediately visible, but VISIA Complexion Analysis provides and easy and fast method to understand the condition of your skin. By differentiating between red and brown skin components, the analysis provides unequaled visualization of color concentration, spider veins, hyperpigmentation, inflammation, among other conditions. With this information, skin care professionals can provide you with tailored treatment and skin care regimens.

The Forever Young BroadBand Light (BBL) treatment rejuvenates your skin and stimulates changes in pigmentation that can lighten or eliminate freckles. BBL focuses light to heat up the upper layers of skin, stimulating the regeneration of cells. This process corrects discoloration and improves elasticity and skin tone. Forever Young BBL can also be used as a preventive regimen, keeping skin looking younger for longer. Results can often be seen after just one treatment—with no patient down time.
